Chapter Thirteen
After the kiss, weâd packed the picnic things away in virtual silence. The only conversation between us was about the most mundane things imaginable, like the best way to stack things back into the basket so that everything fitted and the leftover food didnât get squashed. Eye contact seemed to be in short supply.
It was a different awkwardness than that of the past few days. That had been about the build-up of sexual tension, and whether either of us would act on it. Whereas this⦠This was about what we did with the knowledge we had acted on it, and where that left us.
Jasper was into me. Jasper had called me gorgeous. Jasper had kissed me with a passion and gentle care that was enough to have me swooning. Those thoughts ran on a loop as we made a slight detour to pick up the dogs from Ed before heading back to the farmhouse. From the way Edâs gaze flicked between us, heâd picked up on the strange atmosphere, but I was grateful when he neither mentioned it nor asked questions.
I carried Lucy back to the house, the Pomeranian seeming to have tired herself out with an afternoon spent in the field with Ed. Meanwhile the other two dogs, in true Springer Spaniel fashion, were still just as full as beans as ever, running circles around Jasper and me. At least having Lucy nestled in my arms, and avoiding tripping over Bella and George, provided a useful distraction.
Dinner passed in that same strange energy, Jasper and I making conversation that wasnât really conversation until the air that surrounded us was as thick as molasses with all the things that werenât being said. Was this it? Were we just going to pretend it had never happened? Would that work? Current evidence said it wouldnât. Not unless we were both happy to act like we were nothing more than polite acquaintances. Would I end up having to move back to Eileenâs house, lumpy mattress, and all? Would Jasper stop helping me sort through her things? Would he not want my help with the sanctuary anymore? Had we ruined everything with one kiss? The questions kept coming as I chewed my food perfunctorily, dread pooling in my gut at what the answers might be.
Jasper turned down my offer of help with the dishes. Even though getting up and doing something else would have been far more sensible, I stayed at the kitchen table. Every time I cast a quick glance his way, I imagined I could see the tension radiating off him. On a couple of occasions, I opened my mouth, the lack of finding the right words⦠Hell, any words causing me to shut it again without having said a thing.
I was so lost in thought that I didnât notice Jasperâs approach until heâd already braced his arms against the kitchen table and was leaning over it. âIâm sorry. I shouldnât have kissed you.â
I jerked my head up, the blue-gray eyes fixed on me, seeming to look into my soul after such a long period of avoiding eye contact.
